Referencing street-team advertising tactics while employing Art with a capital A, Jonathan Monk has teamed with NY-based designer Benjamin Critton for the current iteration of the “Billboard Book Project” series from Three Star Books, taking to the streets of New York (and MoMA P.S.1) for a wholly international and urban affair.

Following previous methods with billboards naming the conditions of their own making (before being rendered into book form), designer Benjamin Critton of Benjamin Critton Art Dept. chose to forego the billboard construct and instead designed two identical posters (one in blue and the other red) that are cleverly folded to be deployed from the book and expanded, announcing the stateside arrival of this project series.

Echoing the urban vernacular of city sites upon which an interdiction to POST NO BILLS inevitably invites a curious array of un-solicited displays, “The Billboard Book Project (New York)” posters could be found tiled in checkerboard fashion around the streets of Brooklyn and in Gallery V during the NY Art Book Fair 2013 (Sept 19-22), announcing a European arrival with a uniquely American twist.

As part of the Billboard Book project’s New York iteration, the billboards have been posted to walls around PS1 in Queens, during Printed Matter’s Art Book Fair.  New York, 2013.
