Presented in a carefully crafted box, this publication of facsimiles provides a rare glimpse into the creative process of Swiss artist Thomas Hirschhorn. Serving as a continuation of his acclaimed work "Crystal of Resistance" for the Swiss Pavilion at the 2011 Venice Biennale, it stands as one of the few remaining remnants of the artist's notes from the exhibition. The included sketches, originally taped to the walls of Hirschhorn's studio as references during the setup in Venice, offer a fragment of his visionary world, capturing the ongoing process of shaping and exploring the fractal-like motif of crystals.
Hirschhorn's collages confront a multitude of significant themes, ranging from the grand to the minute, arranged in kaleidoscopic configurations that blur the boundaries between architecture, drawing, sculpture, painting, and printed matter. Three Star Books has meticulously created a limited edition of facsimiles, featuring eighty-eight drawings printed in offset on both sides and carefully assembled in a cardboard box. Each box, personally labeled by the artist, contains three original preparatory drawings from the "Crystal of Resistance" sketches. Through this exceptional project, comprising eighty-eight folios in total, Hirschhorn's intent to give form and his contemplation of aesthetics, natural history, philosophy, love, politics, and the very act of making art today are captured.
Thomas Hirschhorn, born in 1957, is renowned for his unrestricted use of materials such as masking tape, cardboard, wood, and wire, which he employs to create installations that mesmerize viewers as they become an integral "ingredient." Admirers of his work have marveled at the way he stitches together seemingly fragile materials with remarkable skill. From his beginnings in graphic design to his flourishing career as an artist, Hirschhorn has displayed an uncanny genius for transforming the remnants of a drafting table into monumental sculptures. He attributes this ability to his personal politics, a subject he has extensively written and spoken about. For those less acquainted with his work, it is the sheer architectural audacity of his magnificent structures that has endeared Hirschhorn to numerous followers.
The accolades bestowed upon Thomas Hirschhorn, including the prestigious Marcel Duchamp Prize (2000/2001) and the Joseph Beuys Prize (2004), are no coincidence. Few artists can command space in a transcendental manner that references twentieth-century icons while simultaneously captivating audiences with pure spectacle, firmly situating Hirschhorn as a worthy inheritor of the modernist sculptural tradition.
