Jonathan Monk is a metal head and a visual artist. Jonathan Monk’s “Heavy Metal Paintings” series is about transposing Heavy Metal’s music energy by soaking heavy metal band t-shirts in indian ink then throwing them onto raw canvases.
With this simple and direct gesture, Monk connects with the history of action painting: from the Gutai group, Yves Klein’s Anthropometry Performances to Nikki de Saint Phalle’s series of “tirs à la carabine”…
As all performative artistic performance that produces a trace or a souvenir of its own action, Jonathan Monk’s “Heavy Metal Paintings” are very expressive, delicate and seductive. The viewer projects in the “Heavy Metal Paintings” its very own experience and knowledge of heavy metal music and its inherent roughness and power as well as the history of action painting.
“BLACK SABBATH” by Jonathan Monk is a tribute to the great band that fueled the artist’s youth with raw power. Keith McMillan and The Bloomsbury Group created the iconic cover and logo of the revered album “Master Of Reality”. Monk is a fan for eternity.
