Long before the term "non-place" entered the cultural lexicon of theory and urban studies, artists have been exploring the liminal spaces that exist "in between." Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster emerged on the international art scene with a sculptural language that treated any place, no matter how ordinary, with a combination of monumentality and understatement. She belongs to a generation of boundary-breaking artists who seamlessly traversed different media, finding inspiration in literature, film, light, and object-bound installations.
Gonzalez-Foerster is deeply influenced by literature, both in terms of content and form. Many of her works feature stacks of books, serving as markers or referencing the written word as the foundation of her artistic practice. In her proposed limited edition project for Three Star Books, titled "RGB," she presents a trilogy of photo anthologies, each bound in a color corresponding to the predominant hue found within its pages. These books, like a collection of photo albums, sit stacked together.
This pile of books not only exists as a tangible object but also serves as a reflection on the artist's work itself. It evokes the heady fusion characteristic of early conceptual art, blurring the boundaries between artwork and its presentation. However, Gonzalez-Foerster is not only a scenographer but also a colorist, adept at playing with decor and engaging with the architectural elements of public gardens. There is a peculiar sense of "props" in these works, evoking a wistful feeling of nostalgia for bygone times, abandoned beaches, towering apartment buildings, and desolate squares. It is this artful non-art quality that imbues Gonzalez-Foerster's creations with their magical essence.
