In the realm of artist's books, there exists a certain disregard for meticulously handmade bookworks. Artists who dedicate too much attention to the choice of paper, print techniques, bindings, or even elements like pop-ups are often considered to be disconnected from critical discourse.
However, Tauba Auerbach disrupts this narrative. She joins a collective of artists who wholeheartedly embrace skills that can be seen as 21st-century adaptations of deliberate craftsmanship in bookmaking. Sometimes incorporating elements like pop-ups, weaving, or pattern-making, Auerbach effortlessly navigates between processes and mediums. Her distinctive trademark lies in her technical expertise in materials and her extensive exploration through "sampling."
One of her notable creations, "Stab/Ghost," exemplifies her innovative approach. This translucent book consists of clear plastic pages, adorned with silkscreened patterns, meticulously sewn together with lanyards of plastic thread, and carefully mounted on a specially designed light table. Reflecting her fascination with intricate geometries and color theory, the book transcends its function as a mere reading material and also functions as a captivating light sculpture.
