RUG is a book and performance score by Gerard & Kelly, published in 2025 by Three Star Books.
All eleven spreads of RUG are presented here on individual music stands, transforming the space into a visual and performative landscape. This staging not only highlights the materiality and score-like structure of the book but also creates an environment in which RUG can be interpreted — musically, choreographically, or scenographically. The music stands evoke both rehearsal and performance, reinforcing the idea that RUG is not a static object, but a living score awaiting activation. This spatial arrangement invites the viewer to move around and engage with each spread individually, echoing the book’s looping interplay between past and future, structure and improvisation.
The very first activation of RUG took place at Three Star Books on May 23, 2025, as a poetry reading involving eleven members of the audience, with the artists acting as conductors. During this performance, all the texts from the pages were read aloud, with each reader contributing their unique vocal tone and rhythm. This collective reading embodied the spirit of RUG as both a score and a performance, where text, body, and voice merged in real time.
