Cheryl Donegan has created MARGIELA HOMESCHOOL as a tribute to fashion and art. For several years now, Donegan has recycled clothing from her family wardrobe to develop this original upcycling collection. Working with garments belonging to her sons, her husband, and herself, she has produced a collection of around fifty pieces that Three Star Books is pleased to present in a one-night performance at its Paris studio during Fashion Art Week in Paris.
This humble and inventive gesture carries particular resonance in a world marked by excessive waste. With her distinctive style and creativity, Donegan joins the community of upcyclers who, both politically and artistically, seek to resist the culture of consumption. Accompanying the presentation at Three Star Books, Paris, a series of images by US photographer Matthew Spiegelman, featuring model Emma Blackford wearing Donegan’s MARGIELA HOMESCHOOL, will be presented alongside the garments. The photographs were shot in the USA, in Plandome, in February 2026.
Cheryl Donegan is an American artist whose practice spans painting, video, performance, and fashion. Emerging in the 1990s, she is known for work that explores the intersections of abstraction, popular culture, gender, and material experimentation. Grounded in a feminist perspective, her practice critically engages with the history of painting and the representation of women, often reclaiming craft, domesticity, and fashion as sites of artistic and political agency.

Three Star Books and Cheryl Donegan would like to extend their warmest thanks to all those who contributed to Margiela Homeschool: Matthew Spiegelman, together with his devoted assistants Dylan Anderson and Emmy Laurie; Emma Blackford, our model, who bravely endured the cold to pose for Cheryl in support of this project; Isolde Boutin, for her thoughtful coordination of the project and for Emma’s makeup; and Kenneth Goldsmith, for his constant support and for generously opening the doors of his beautiful home in Plandome, Long Island, where the photographs were taken in February 2026.
